Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there any prophet of the Lord around, so we could question the Lord through him?”
One of the servants of Israel’s king answered, “Elisha, Shaphat’s son, is here. He used to pour water on Elijah’s hands.”
Jehoshaphat said, “He has the Lord’s word!” So Israel’s king and Jehoshaphat and Edom’s king went down to see Elisha. -2 Kings 3:11, 12
Israel is in trouble. A warring enemy is headed their way. The king needs wisdom for how to carry on. But now that Elijah has died, he doesn’t know who to count on for straight talk and connection with God.
A servant recommends Elisha. So three leaders go to see him to hear from the Lord.
What if someone comes to you for counsel today? Have you prepared for such a time? Praying, studying, learning from our own mentors, and relying on the Lord in our own lives prepare us for such a moment. Whether it’s a child or a king who asks of us, let it be said of us as it was of Elisha that we have served others, and that we “have the Lord’s word” too.
Isn’t there a prophet of the Lord around? Have mercy on me, O Lord, when that person is me! And let me have words from you. Amen.
Pray for the leaders of our community, our state, and our country. Pray especially for their advisors to give them good counsel.
Help your children write a letter to their state representative about something they think their leader should know from God’s word. Get the address here: http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/Home.aspx
