O Lord, you teach me the way of life.
In your presence is total celebration.
Beautiful things are always in your right hand. -Psalm 16:11
Sunday evening our congregation stepped together in one huge leap forward. We broke ground on our new facility, a renovation of a former medical building at 4241 Tanglewood Lane. My heart and mind are so full it is difficult to express in words. It was, as the psalmist says, a total celebration in the presence of the Lord.
Most of all I am marveling at such a tangible picture of what faithfulness looks like. I marvel at the faithfulness of God to connect our congregation to the spreading of the gospel in this community and beyond. God’s faithfulness is on display in amazing things like an Eastertide miracle as the congregation voted to purchase a new building and sell our old buildings on the same day. Amazing things like a new building that fits our needs so well in such a prime location. Amazing things like finding a contractor who loves the Lord and is doing this project at great discount to us. Truly, as the psalmist says, beautiful things are in God’s right hand!
I am also in awe of the faithfulness of the people of this congregation. In particular, seeing our elderly members attend the groundbreaking was a sight to behold. These folks have seen so much of our church’s history. It is our job to honor them. Yet, as Foy Bates, whose family was among the founders of our church, said Sunday night, “This is not about us. This is about the future!” That’s faithfulness.
I think of the faithfulness of those who have gone before us, people I’ve never met but will one day meet in heaven. I am in awe that there is something in the DNA of this congregation, planted 111 years ago, that continues to propel this church to move forward fearlessly. Was it founding pastor S.W. Jackson or lay leader A.W. Wight who fostered this kind of faith from the very beginning? Whoever it was, we are in their debt.
Truly, great is Thy Faithfulness, O God! And yours, o church!
